by Desmond Guarin

The December 5, 2019 Coordination of Care Community meeting at 2:00 – 3:00 pm (EST) will feature a presentation by Marcy Antonio: “First steps towards a standardized Canadian social and behavioral determinants of health value set for electronic health records”

Marcy Antonio is a PhD candidate at the University of Victoria in interdisciplinary studies, pulling from Nursing, Health Informatics, and Public Health. She enjoys the challenges of working with and integrating knowledge from these disciplines that view health care with different yet with overlapping initiatives. Her dissertation explores how digital technologies are being utilized to support social connection, illness experience, and outcomes by people living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

In Marcy’s previous work experiences in the community setting, she witnessed the impact that social determinants can have on people living with disabilities and recognized the complexity of addressing these disparities. She is particularly interested in exploring techniques that can be used to inform the design of health information technologies.

Marcy has been conducting an environmental scan of social and behavioral determinants of health (SBDH), as a first step in developing a standardized Canadian SBDH value set for electronic health records (EHRs). She will be presenting on:

1) key papers and initiatives found from this search;

2) the challenges in developing standards related to concepts that are socially and culturally specific; and

3) how this value set could potentially be used to foster coordination across primary and community care.
