March 10, 2020 Sex and Gender Working Group Agenda Item Notes
1. Welcome 2. Presentation – StatCan Centre for Demography: Measuring Gender Diversity in Canada - France-Pascale Ménard)/ Jean-Pierre Séguin Discussion touched on practices for collecting SO/GI data in census, statistical difficulties in justifying inclusion of sexual and gender diversity data elements and need for collaboration at all levels on this issue. Discussion on practice related to three options in both sex and gender: male, female, intersex and man, woman, non-binary. Discussion about data quality, statistical significance and implications for patient care. StatCan survey will be designed to eliminate risk of false positives, and emphasis will be on lived gender. Use of male/female rather than man/woman for gender is thought to reduce confusion. Will also use Treasury Board policy and evidence in asking a two-part question: sex and gender. Cabinet hasn’t yet met. French translation is an important consideration as the relationship? Is not 1:1. Discussion about sex at birth, and how X and U responses are being treated. Has yet to be confirmed by StatCan. Is likely through imputation of data elements rather than suppression. 3. Group Discussion Group discussion circled around some distinctions between data quality and statistical analyses and clinical/administrative aspects of sex and gender data elements. Responses can be used as a political response, which affects data quality. Strong recommendation for male, female, intersex for sex and man, woman, non-binary for gender. Some discussion about clinical case for “indeterminate” in data sets, particularly for still births. Inclusivity really important to patient care and also in data sets. 4. Other Business Dr. Rob McLure, Chair of the HL7 Gender Harmony Project provided some details about that project and invited participation. See: https://confluence.hl7.org/display/VOC/The+Gender+Harmony+Project Dr. Francis Lau discussed CIHR Grant Consultation sessions. First to be held March 24. 5. Adjournment |
