New DICOM Working Group for Dermatology
We are pleased to announce the re-start of DICOM WG-19 for Dermatology. The purpose of this WG is to extend DICOM to incorporate new imaging techniques in dermatology by developing a DICOM supplement for dermoscopy. A dermoscope is an imaging device which includes a light source and magnifier to view structural features of a mole or skin lesion. Dermoscopy improves the diagnosis of melanoma when compared to visual inspection. This work will help in the early detection of melanoma by standardizing the storage and retrieval of dermoscopic images and associated clinical information. This is needed to compare images taken at different times, so changes in a mole can be identified. Changes in a mole are an early indication of skin cancer.
The WG is co-chaired by Dr. Liam Caffery, Senior Research Fellow/Telehealth Technology Director, Centre for Online Health - Centre for Health Services Research, Faculty of Medicine, The University of Queensland and Dr. Josep Malvehy, Dermatology Department, IDIBAPS, CIBER de enfermedades raras, University of Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain.

The next WG-19 meeting by teleconference is Tuesday, July 25, 2019, 8:00-9:00 a.m. US ET. Newcomers are welcome. The dial-in information can be found in the DICOM calendar: http://workspaces.nema.org/dicom/Lists/Calendar/calendar.aspx
