About the Partnership

The Partnership, now part of Canada Health Infoway's Standards Collaborative, is designed to bring together public and private sector experts in the health information standards field. It is the bridge to a vibrant health information standards community.

The Partnership began in 1996, initiated by the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI), and has a strong base of members who are committed to advancing the national agenda in health information standards. Almost 100 member organizations with over 300 representatives participate in this initiative, with Infoway fulfilling the secretariat function. For more information regarding the transition, please click here.

The Partnership provides a forum to learn about, influence and build consensus on national standards for health information. The goal of the Partnership is to leverage current provincial, national and international activities in order to contribute to the adoption and tailoring of existing standards for the Canadian health system.

Purpose of the Partnership

  • To act as a "network" of standards and health information experts through which input to development projects and national priority-setting for health information standards may be solicited;
  • To plan and to provide semi-annual conferences featuring presentations and workshops on major Canadian and international health information standards development activities;
  • To actively keep members informed of standards development news and events in Canada and internationally; and
  • To provide national recognition to members as informed health information standards stakeholders.

Partnership Activities

Semi-annual Partnership conferences are held every spring and fall. Conferences include plenary sessions as well as concurrent themes or tracks. Subject-specific workshops provide excellent networking opportunities as well as the ability to influence through informed discussion and debate. Regular and timely communication about national and international standards development activities in the area of health information is a key Partnership activity aimed at keeping the membership informed and current. A number of media are used to keep members informed including regular electronic newsletters (Interchange) and broadcast e-mails.

In addition, the Partnership solicits participation from among its members on standards development projects at the national and international level. For example, Partnership members may be invited to sit on an Expert Work Team convened under the Canadian Advisory Committee to ISO TC 215: Health Informatics. Furthermore, Infoway may solicit Partnership members for Expert Advisory Groups that it convenes for selected standards-related projects.
